Game server hosting in the UK: what to look for
A practical guide to choosing UK game server hosting for Garry's Mod, Minecraft, Rust, Terraria, or Project Zomboid. Covers hardware location, panel quality, trial policies, and pricing.
If you are looking for UK game server hosting, you will find no shortage of providers. Most offer similar specs on paper. What separates them in practice is the panel quality, where the hardware actually sits, and whether the support and trial policies reflect a real product or a reseller operation.
This guide covers what matters when choosing a host, what to watch out for, and how Zeros Host approaches each point.
Hardware location
UK players care about latency more than the hosting country. A provider marketing "UK servers" might have hardware in a US datacenter, connected to the UK through a CDN. For real-time games this matters: a US East Coast server adds 100-120ms round-trip for UK players, compared to 15-40ms from a European datacenter.
Zeros Host uses Hetzner hardware in Germany. We say this plainly rather than claiming "UK servers" in a way that obscures where the hardware actually is. We've also brought a real UK (London) node online, and we'll say just as plainly when it's live for customer servers - it isn't yet. Typical ping from UK cities to Germany:
- London: 15-25ms
- Manchester: 20-35ms
- Birmingham: 18-30ms
- Edinburgh: 25-40ms
For most games, anything under 60ms is indistinguishable from a local server in normal play. Germany is comfortably in that range for UK players.
Panel quality
Generic hosting panels (Pterodactyl, Multicraft) are fine for basic server management. The difference shows when you need game-specific tooling. For a Garry's Mod server, that means Workshop integration, addon management, and DarkRP configuration. For Minecraft, it means plugin support, version switching, and world management.
Zeros Host runs a heavily modified Pterodactyl fork. A file manager and start/stop controls are table stakes; each supported game gets tools built for that game specifically. The GMod panel includes a Backdoor Scanner, Mod Manager, Workshop sync, and DarkRP Config Builder. The Minecraft panel includes a Plugin Manager, World Manager, and Mod Manager. Terraria and Project Zomboid each have game-specific configuration editors.
Trial policies
Responsible hosts offer trials before you commit. The minimum worth looking for is a trial that gives you full panel access, not just a demo environment. You want to test your connection, upload a config, and see how the server behaves.
Most plans on Zeros Host include a 24-hour free trial with full panel access, no credit card required. Garry's Mod and Minecraft servers are provisioned from a pre-built template and are ready in seconds; Rust, Project Zomboid, and Terraria install their game files on first start, which is normally quick but depends on Steam or the mod loader's own download servers. If the trial convinces you, you keep it. If not, nothing is charged.

Pricing and plans
Game server hosting prices in the UK vary from a few pounds to hundreds per month depending on RAM, player slots, and support level. Most hobby and community servers fall in the £5-£25/mo range.
The most important pricing considerations:
- RAM allocation: more RAM lets you run more plugins, addons, or mods. Undersizing RAM causes crashes and lag, not just slower performance.
- Storage: world files, backups, and addon collections grow over time. Check the included storage, not just RAM.
- Backups: look for automatic backups, not just manual ones. Manual-only backups get skipped.
- Support access: some plans gate priority support behind the highest tier. Zeros Host includes community Discord support on all plans.

What to avoid
A few patterns worth watching for when evaluating any host:
- Claimed "UK servers" without hardware location detail: ask where the game server process physically runs, not where the control panel is hosted.
- No trial or credit card required for "free" trial: if you cannot evaluate a server before paying, the product confidence is not high.
- Generic panels with no game-specific tooling: a panel that works for every game usually works well for none of them specifically.
- Oversold nodes: shared hardware means shared CPU. If the host does not publish how many servers run per node, ask.
