Garry's Mod is a game built around community servers, Workshop addons, and gamemodes that barely resemble the base game. Hosting requirements reflect that. A host that works fine for a Minecraft or Rust server may be a poor fit for a DarkRP community managing hundreds of Workshop addons, Lua-heavy gamemodes, and a persistent economy.

Hardware location and ping

For UK GMod communities, target 15-40ms ping to the server. That is achievable from UK or nearby European hardware. GMod's default tick rate is 33Hz, and at that tick rate, latency above 80ms becomes noticeable in physics interactions. For DarkRP and other PvP modes with shooting or prop manipulation, staying under 60ms is a reasonable target. Our Germany location is comfortably under that from any UK city.

Addon management

A typical DarkRP server runs 30-100+ Workshop addons. Installing, updating, and de-conflicting them is the most time-consuming part of running a GMod server. Generic panels treat this as a file management problem. Zeros Host treats it as a GMod problem.

The Mod Manager in the Zeros Host panel handles Workshop sync, dependency tracking, and update monitoring. You select addons by Workshop ID; the manager handles the sync with Steam, checks for updates, and flags conflicts. Backdoor protection

Paid GMod addons are frequently redistributed as cracked versions that include Lua backdoors. These backdoors give the original crackers admin access to any server running the modified addon. They are not detectable by file names or workshop listings alone - the backdoor is in the Lua code itself.

Workshop collection sync

Client-side Workshop packs are what players download when they join your server. Managing which addons are in the client collection, keeping the collection up to date when you add server-side addons, and ensuring the download list is correct for fast-connect players - this is typically manual work on standard hosting.

The Zeros Host Workshop integration handles collection sync: when you add a Workshop addon to your server, it is automatically added to the client download list. Players joining a fresh server get the correct addon set without the server operator manually updating a Workshop collection in Steam.
